Killerspin Arnold Table Tennis Championships
Holy Cross takes top honors in college team event
Led by college standout Joey Cochran, and solid play from his brother
Gordy Cochran, Holy Cross College stormed Columbus, OH, to take
regional collegiate teams by surprise in capturing the top prize in the
college team event at the 2009 Killerspin Arnold Table Tennis
Championships. The Arnold Table Tennis events are an annual part of the
Arnold Fitness Festival held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center,
taking place March 6-8, 2009 this year. While still relatively new to
intercollegiate play, competing in the NCTTA's Midwest Division for the
first time this Spring, Holy Cross used the 3-person format of the team
event to their advantage in upending Michigan (NCTTA Ohio Division) who
finished second. Other participating teams included Akron,
Buffalo, Ferris State, and Ohio State.

Elite college program in the news

High
School Table Tennis on the Rise
Successful high school events in Minnesota and Wisconsin offer hope for
high school TT everywhere
Fourteen teams of at least 10 players each (148 players total) competed
in the 2009 Minnesota High School State Championships; even more than
the 120 that competed in the 2008 event. "One way I measure our
improvement as a junior program is by how many of our juniors go on to
NCTTA college teams," says event coordinator and Minnesota League
Director, Mitchell Seidenfeld.
At the University of Wisconsin, Madison, they've taken the high school
concept even a step further. By holding a high school tournament in
their area, they've managed to raise money that will go into a college
scholarship fund to be awarded to, you guessed it, a deserving high
schooler moving on to the college ranks. The inaugural event had six
schools of four-person teams compete in the giant round robin format.
Between entry fees and t-shirts sold, the event easily brought in over
$400 for the scholarship program. And Andrew Knips, who coordinated the
event, would love to see others adopt a similar program in other parts
of the country. "If 20 schools in 20 states started hosting annual high
school events, college programs would be bringing in more money, and,
more importantly, promoting table tennis on a completely new level."
