NCTTA Newsletter
June 2008

Summer may be the off-season for college table tennis, but that doesn't mean there's nothing doin' in the college table tennis world. We've got the ongoing NCTTA personnel revamp with Board elections just completed, Division Director applications being accepted and lots of open committee spots. Plus we've got a college table tennis presence at the recent Ping Pong Diplomacy Rematch and at the upcoming US Open. Plus, we're unveiling a brand new national table tennis scholarship program. Perhaps you'd like to apply? The June newsletter has the full details.

Division Director Applications
Now accepting statements of interest for 2008-2009 Division Directors

Ever wondered how your school has a chance to play another school 1000 miles away? Or why your school doesn't offer a table tennis scholarship, but should? For those interested in being involved with the groundfloor operations of college table tennis, here's your chance!

NCTTA Division Directors are a core part of college table tennis, acting as NCTTA representatives to continue the development of college table tennis in their region. Typically a Division Director will have the following responsibilities:

  • Acts as central contact person for all the schools/teams in one geographic division
  • Recruits players and teams within this region to join NCTTA and participate in the NCTTA League
  • Helps plan and coordinate Division tournaments and other college table tennis events in the region
  • Interacts with Division Director Representative to coordinate activities with the Board of Directors and other Division Directors
Division Directors receive substantial training in running table tennis events, get an NCTTA Division Director shirt, and also get paid certification as USATT umpires. If you're interested in this great opportunity, please consider submitting a statement of interest consisting of:
  1. Your name
  2. Location
  3. Status (working, student, etc.)
  4. Which Division you are applying for
  5. Past work experience (TT-related or not)
  6. Why you are interested in this position
Please send any questions or statements of interest to info@nctta.org. The NCTTA Board will select the most qualified Director from the applicant pool for each Division. Statements need to be receieved by July 5th for consideration.

Board Election Results
New Treasurer and Athlete Representative join re-elected President and VP

Results are in for the recent election of the NCTTA Board of Directors. Willy Leparulo and Joseph Wells retained their positions as President and Vice President, respectively. Francois Charvet (formerly of the Ohio State University) was elected as the new Treasurer and Mikhail Kazantsev (University of Southern California) edged James Roeder (Ashland University) for the newly created Athlete Representative spot.

The newly elected board members will serve a two-year term running from July 1, 2008 until June 30, 2010. Still vacant are the Historian position and the Division Director Representative (which will be selected by the Division Directors, once they are in place). The new board is definitely taking shape:

  • President: Willy Leparulo
  • Vice-President: Joseph Wells
  • Treasurer: Francois Charvet
  • Historian: VACANT
  • Athlete Representative: Mikhail Kazantsev
  • USATT Representative: David Del Vecchio
  • Division Director Representative: Chosen by Division Directors
Thanks to all the candidates that participated in this election and the many schools that cast votes. Active participation of NCTTA member schools in the election process is very important to the continued success of the organization.

Member Feature: Francois Charvet
Part of an ongoing series profiling a notable NCTTA member club, athlete, or organizer

This month's feature member profile's NCTTA's new Treasurer, Francois Charvet:

Four years ago, Francois Charvet walked onto the largest college campus in the United States. With over eight hundred student organizations at The Ohio State University, none involved Francois’s favorite sport, table tennis. So, Francois took it upon himself to start what is nationally known and recognized today as the Buckeye Table Tennis Club ... “We went from three basement ping pong tables in a common area to twelve competition tables in a spacious multipurpose room” ... in 2007, Charvet and fellow Buckeye Table Tennis Club member Doug Hurak took on the biggest challenge of college table tennis, hosting the 2007 National Table Tennis Championships.

Ping Pong Diplomacy: The Rematch
College players from USC and UCLA participate in event recalling historic Ping Pong Diplomacy

Current and former top players from the US and China met at the Richard Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, California for a three day table tennis event commemorating the original Ping Pong Diplomacy in the early 1970s. Called Ping Pong Diplomacy: The Rematch, the event ran from June 10-12 and consisted of a variety of table tennis activities, including a head to head face-off between college players from Southern California rivals USC and UCLA. 2007 Collegiate Men's Singles Champion Mark Hazinski (Texas Wesleyan) also participated in The Rematch program, going up against 2007 World Junior Champion Song Shichao from China.

There was lots of press coverage of the event (search for "ping pong diplomacy" in Google news), including the Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, Sports Illustrated and plenty of local television stations as well.

NCTTA at the US Open
NCTTA to have college table tennis information table at US Open in Las Vegas

The US Open is one of the largest annual table tennis events in North America, attracting some of the top table tennis players from not just around the country, but internationally as well. In an effort to spread the word about college table tennis, NCTTA will be setting up an information table at the US Open, July 2-5 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

If you have information about your school's table tennis program (flyers, brochures, that type of thing) that you'd like NCTTA to make available at the event, please mail it to:

NCTTA

Santa Monica, CA 90405

Any materials need to be received by July 1, 2008. If you'll be at the event, look forward to seeing you there.

Join a Committee
Committees are critical to NCTTA's success; join one and make a contribution

Sure, people are always urging you to do things for a 'good cause': end poverty, fight hunger, cure cancer, recycle, save the whales. Well now you can add one more to that list, join an NCTTA committee. Ok, so it might not be on exactly the same level as the other causes, but if you care about college table tennis, don't you think it might be a good idea to contribute to improving college table tennis? And the best way to help college table tennis, of course, is to make a large six- or seven-figure financial contribution to NCTTA. But if you don't have a few spare mil. lying around, the next best thing is to join one of the many NCTTA committees:

  1. Media Relations
  2. Marketing
  3. Financial
  4. Championships
  5. Women’s
  6. Alumni and College Relations
  7. Rules and Audit
  8. Website
  9. Coaches
  10. World University Games
  11. Disabled Athletes
  12. Recruiting
  13. Ratings
  14. Eligibility
Email info@nctta.org for more information, or if you're interested in participating on one of these committees. Your help really can make a difference.

Newgy-NCTTA Scholarship Progam
With support from Newgy, NCTTA introduces a new nationwide scholarship program
There may only be a handful of schools that currently have table tennis scholarship programs, but now there's a new scholarship program open to athletes attending any NCTTA member school. The NCTTA National Table Tennis Scholarship Program seeded with initial support from our friends at Newgy Industries, long-time supporters of college table tennis. Scholarships are open to students pursuing their first degree and scholarships will be awarded based on a combination of table tennis skill, academics, essay and financial need.

Find out more about the program, including how to submit an application at the Scholarship Program website. The application deadline for the 2008-2009 academic year is August 15, 2008. A limited number of scholarships are available in the first year, but we hope to expand the program in the future.
