* SOUTHERN DIVISION HOLDS 8 SCHOOL MEET *

On March 1st 1997, the Southern Division held the second of it¹s two large all-school meets at
Hofstra University. Even though two schools (Princeton, Stony Brook) who were at the fall meet
were not present this time, there was a great turnout including 3 new schools! The schools
attending were: Columbia (new), Cooper Union, Cornell (new), Hofstra, Nassau Community College
(new), New York University, Rensellaer Polytechnic and Yale University.
This meet, combined with the Southern Division meet that took place in the fall was to make up
the overall Southern Division season.
By all accounts, the tournament was a smashing success. It started at 10 in the morning when
the RPI team (who drove 240!!! miles) got to the site. It was a hectic schedule as the eight
schools each played one an other. When all was said and done at the end of the day, 214 matches
had been played!
After a 1-4 record during the fall meet, the Hofstra team exhibited a vastly different
performance -- sweeping the entire meet and coming away with a 7-0 record! This fantastic
showing clinched them the best record in the division -- 8-4 combined. RPI¹s 3-4 permance
this time was enough to put them into second place in the division, and give them an overall
record of 7-5 combined with the fall meet.
Newcomers to the division, Columbia and Cornell, certainly made a grand entrance as they came
away with a 6-2, and 5-3 record, respectively.
Of course, the competition was only one aspect of the meet. Lots of good socializing and
bonding took place, I hear.

Here are the complete results:

A note from Dr. Suguru Araki, Hofstra¹s advisor:

On behalf of the Hofstra University Table Tennis Club, I cordially
extend my deepest appreciation to all the participants from Columbia University (30 miles),
Cooper Union for the Advacement of Science and Art (30 miles), Cornell University (250 miles),
Nassau Community College (2 miles), New York University (30 miles), Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute (190 miles), and Yale University (110 miles) in the middle of their busy academic
schedule.

I must also publicly thank at least the following two individuals for
having successfully lead a group of exceptionally enthusiastic and fine
athletes to yesterday's meet. Selfless and tireless devotion of Joseph Su,
Director of LNITT Southern Division, and Nobuhiro Inagaki, HUTTC President, during the past
month is to be truly commended by any standard.

* WHAT¹S AHEAD? A MESSAGE FROM THE PREZ *

As the season winds down, we still have much work ahead of us. We have made the League much
stronger this year - we completed our matches, the season except for the finals, is nearly
done. We have increased the number of participating schools. For this, much of the credit
goes to our tireless division directors, Joseph Su and Charles Sanders.

But we should be mindful of the coming seasons and years. The single most important thing
we can do to ensure the continued success of the league is to create a strong, structured,
legitimate constitution. The LNITT currently has a constitution -- but it is oudated and
lacking in many respects. We need to rework it and update it together so that it may keep
the League strong forever.
Soon I will post a copy of the current constitution to the LNITT Discussion and Announcements
list. I would like all of you that are concerned with the future of the LNITT to read it,
comment on it and participate in reforming it.
If you are not yet on the LNITT Discussions and Announcements list, send a message to
listserv@dartmouth.edu with the following in the body of the message:

But substitute your own name instead of Bob Smith. If you have trouble, simply send me an
email and I will subscribe you.

I look forward to working with you,

Robert
