Virginia Tech Hosts 2014 ACUI Table Tennis Champs

ACUI Table Tennis and Virginia Tech partnered up to host the 2014 ACUI Recreation and Leisure Championship tournament, which included both Billiards and Table Tennis, May 30th to June 1st.

Schools from around the US joined in on this ACUI event. ACUI sponsors recreation and leisure table tennis tournaments around the US, and this Championships is the last stop for many of the athletes represented. This event isn't the mammoth NCTTA type of event with hundreds of athletes, but it still offers a unique set of qualities.

"Typically the ACUI tournament is a smaller Collegiate event, so you will see the group of competitors come together unlike in any other tournament," said tournament organizer and NCTTA President, Willy Leparulo. While in other competitions you may find #1 and #2 seeds are generally very chummy, that wasn't the case here as everyone was pretty friendly before, after, and even during the competition.

The ACUI Table Tennis Championships had three events: Open Doubles, Men's Singles, and Women's Singles. Because she was the sole female participant, Diana Phung from University of Utah took home the win, but she was able to compete in the Consolation singles men's tournament to get some extra matches in. Open doubles featured a final match with Diana Phung (Utah) teamed with #1 singles seed Alex Hohl (UNC Charlotte), against the pair of Chris Hatcher (University of Wisconsin-Whitewater) and Patrick Ezeadikwa (Valparaiso). Hatcher and Ezeadikwa took the match from the heavily favored team of Alex and Diana. See the highlights in the video here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikFq4ZbDwVE

In men's singles, Alex Hohl, a USATT 2200 rated player who is originally from Switzerland, faced a first time finalist in Gino Bernasconi out of Florida International University. Alex proved to be too much for Gino in the finals, but it was a first for Bernasconi to make it to the event final. Bernasconi stated that he was "super thrilled to have made it this far having played the best to my ability." There is always next year for those who did or didn't win. Speaking of next year, ACUI is looking for schools to host next year's Championships; check out the info here: http://www.acui.org/tabletennis/

America's Team Championship Features College Players

The college table tennis season may be over, but that doesn't stop many collegiate players from competing in USA Table Tennis sanctioned tournaments; even some in a team format. Such was the America's Team Championship in Rockford, Illinois, host of the 2013 NCTTA Championships.

America's Team Championship, run by NCTTA friend Ed Hogshead, brought in 42 teams from around the USA, mostly from the Midwest but there were also players from Florida, Arizona, NY, and Texas.

The following schools were represented in this tournament by full teams or players: University of Minnesota, Florida State University, University of Central Florida, University of Florida, Oakland University, Ohio State University, Lindenwood University, and Governors State. There were even ex-college players from Kansas State University (Zach Moore played in NCTTA back in mid 2000's), Baldwin-Wallace's Keith Pech (played in NCTTA just last year).

Collegiate players were alive and well in this tournament which basically created a mini NCTTA tournament with screams and cries of wins and losses commonly heard at the NCTTA's. There was even a team named "NCTTA" at the tournament that included former collegiate players from UVA and Virginia Tech and current Mid Atlantic Regional Director, Seemant Teotia.

Even the University of Minnesota and Florida State teams play against each other, though Lindenwood, the only other full university team, was in another division. Minnesota bested Florida State this time around, but they will both look forward to when they can face up for real!

In the end, the winner of Divsion 1 was Team XNT5 which featured Governors State player and former NCTTA Division Director Wenjie Nie; 2nd place went to the Fire Breathing Rubber Duckies (team with collegiate players) and then Team Collegiate (Lindenwood players). The "NCTTA" team finished at the top of Division 3; University of Minnesota finished 3rd in Division 2.

Let us know what your summer is looking like and what tournaments you are playing in and traveling to!

Pictured below are the University of Minnesota and Florida State University teams!

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant Honors MC Standout Cheng Li

By Andy Kanengiser
NCTTA Media Relations Chairman

Mississippi Governor, Phil Bryant, enjoys wearing cowboy boots, loves bringing jobs to the Magnolia State and stays busy promoting healthcare initiatives for citizens of all ages.

It didn't make front-page newspaper headlines, but the state's chief executive also recently signed a nice resolution saluting Mississippi College table tennis star, Cheng Li.

Bryant is always involved supporting campaigns to step up physical fitness among Mississippians, and frequently attends college sporting events around the state. So the table tennis resolution for the MC standout made good sense. In addition, Mississippi College is the Republican governor's alma mater. Bryant earned a master's degree from MC and is a former political science instructor at the Baptist-affiliated school.

Li received the gubernatorial honor and a hearty round of applause at Mississippi College's Sports Hall of Fame banquet on the Clinton campus. At the event, new members of the Hall of Fame were inducted and the university honored its outstanding student athletes on soccer, cross country, football, basketball, and baseball teams, among others.  A 20-year-old business student from China, Li was recognized for becoming the No. 1 collegiate table tennis player in North America for the 2014 season.

The 6' 3" student athlete from Mississippi College won the title at the TMS 2014 College Table Tennis Championships in Monroeville, PA in early April. The resolution from Gov. Bryant noted that achievement and Cheng Li's success as a player and coach in the USA & China.

Li also was named the NCTTA's player of the year for 2014. To win the title, Li defeated some outstanding players from powerhouse teams like Texas Wesleyan before his victory over MC teammate Yichi Zhang in the finals.  Off the court, Cheng Li serves as a goodwill ambassador for Mississippi College. "What I like best about the school are the people," he said. "It's nice to have so many wonderful people here.''

The Mississippi College team finished No. 2 for the third year in a row at the NCTTA Championships, with Texas Wesleyan winning the coed title for the 11th consecutive year.

The MC Choctaws will be strong again next season.

Cheng Li, Yichi Zhang, and MC's awesome doubles duo of Zescheng "Leo'' Huang, 19, and Junyu Xiao, 23, are returning to play for the school in Clinton this fall. All four are natives of China where table tennis is king.

MC's lone American player, Tyler Brogdan, of Birmingham, Alabama plans to study in China when the fall semester rolls around in August. Another top-notch MC table tennis player, Joe Xie, graduated with a master's degree in sports management in May. The team's former captain, Xie, will be missed.

Native of Argentina Leads South Florida Table Tennis Division

Tourists flock to Argentina to see masterful tango performances, hike the South American nation's volcanic peaks and check out the incredible pro soccer scene.

Argentina is also home to lots of lively table tennis leagues, and native son, Carlos Zeller, has brought some of that passion to South Florida.

Hooked on table tennis since he was a teenager in Argentina, Zeller, 64, is among the founders of the Broward Table Tennis Club in the Miami area in 1990. He became its president in 2004, and five years ago opened a new club in Hollywood, Florida.

After spending 35 years in the woodworking industry (before that it was the oil business), and deciding to retire, Zeller discovered he had a little more time on his hands.

With his roots in the South Florida region since moving to the USA at age 27, Carlos looked for new challenges. He wanted to find ways to bring top-notch collegiate table tennis players to his beautiful club in Hollywood. As a result, he recently signed on to become the new director of the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association's South Florida Division.

With a wonderful club showcasing the talents of four professional coaches, it made sense for Zeller to expand his horizons to an NCTTA division including such schools as Nova Southeastern University, Barry College, Broward College and Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. The club is also home to an international umpire.

Zeller is a bright guy who received his degrees, including a Masters in industrial engineering at Buenos Aires University in Argentina.

After two years of paying hefty rent for his new table tennis club in Hollywood, Carlos figured out that for the same amount of money he could own the building. And since then, Zeller and supporters have operated the table tennis club as a non-profit organization.

The native of Argentina knows the table tennis game and what it takes to organize tournaments. Over the years, he's run more than 100 tournaments.

His love of table tennis began when he was just 13 and continued for eight more years. He picked up the game again in his late 20s.

"I played many team sports, but when I had the chance to learn table tennis, I just fell in love with the sport.''  In Argentina, the Olympic sport of table tennis is much more organized than it is in South Florida, he said. "There is a much larger percentage of the population playing in Argentina, and there are leagues everywhere.''

A former Florida Senior Olympics table tennis player, he wants to take steps to make the fast-paced game a vibrant sport in his region of the Sunshine State. "We applaud his spirit and are delighted to welcome Carlos Zeller to our team,'' says NCTTA President Willy Leparulo of Tallahassee, Florida. "We believe he will energize that key division in Florida, and, at the same time, boost interest in the sport in his area.''

Adam Bobrow Reaches For The Stars As ITTF Commentator

By Andy Kanengiser
NCTTA Media Relations Chairman

For Adam Bobrow, it doesn't get any better than this.

The University of Southern California alumnus loved every minute on the world stage featuring the best table tennis players on the planet.

It was Bobrow who did a superb job as the ITTF commentator at the World Table Tennis Championships in Japan this May. Getting an up-close look at the globe's finest table tennis players in action was fantastic, to say the least, for the NCTTA veteran.

"Commentating the WTTC was amazing,'' Bobrow said in a recent interview on the Internet. He shared his views live as he watched the electrifying table tennis games unfold before 9,000 cheering fans packing Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo. To land the fabulous gig, Adam submitted the winning audition tape in an ITTF contest.

In many ways, it really wasn't a stretch for Adam to be the voice of the ITTF. He's been serving as a commentator at NCTTA championship games stretching back three years ago in the USA - from Plano, Texas to Rockford, Illinois and last year in Monroeville, Pennsylvania.

But the WTTC in Japan was before a much bigger audience in a world-class venue. Adam stepped up and did a terrific job as the top table tennis tournament on Earth played out. Adam also recently worked as a commentator for the ITTF at the China Open after catching a few hours sleep on the plane.

Bobrow admits he does get paid for the work even though it's lots of fun. Says Bobrow: "I really love table tennis.''

The International Table Tennis Federation's contest "the Voice of Table Tennis 2.0'' opened the door and Adam reached for the stars.

Before submitting his audition tape, Bobrow wisely sought the advice of his friend David Del Vecchio, who is always insightful about media and table tennis. David is another longtime NCTTA leader with a passion for the Olympic sport. Del Vecchio and Bobrow run LAPingPong.com

What's next for Bobrow? Whether he's flying Air China to head to another breathtaking table tennis tournament in East Asia, or just hanging out in the USA, his future looks bright.
