Record
College Table Tennis Paricipation in 08-09
NCTTA enjoys continued growth with 141 member schools in the 2008-2009
season
A
record 141 colleges and universities joined NCTTA for the 2008-2009
competition season. That's 17 more schools than in 2007-2008, and more than 30% growth in member schools over the
past two years! The number of League matches played increased 25%
last year alone. All told, NCTTA estimates more than 3000 students were
involved in organized college table tennis this past year through
member clubs, tournaments, and League play.
"Our club is exploding with a myriad of new members," remarks John
McInerney, founder of the table tennis club at Central Florida. Anyone
who attended an NCTTA League competition this past season witnessed this
growth first hand. Since the growth trends show few signs of stopping,
NCTTA is working on adding new divisions in 2009-2010 to better serve
several different geographic regions. Looking toward another banner year ahead!
2008-2009 Superlative Award Nominations
Nominate the best players, coaches, teams, and Division Director of the year
NCTTA is
looking for the BEST OF THE BEST (or the most improved of the
improved). That’s right, it’s time to send in your nominations for the
teams, athletes, and coaches of the year. With the end of the 2008-2009
competition season upon us, let's celebrate those that worked
extra hard training throughout the season and demonstrated outstanding
play out on the court this year.
NCTTA will award the winner of each category a 50 dollar Killerspin gift certificate.
Only one gift certificate will be given to each winner, so “Joe Smith”
can win multiple honors, but will only receive one gift certificate.
Here are the categories (with the 2008 winners in parentheses):
- Male Athlete of the Year (Adam Hugh, Princeton)
- Female Athlete of the Year (Ines Perhoc, Texas Wesleyan)
- Rookie of the Year (Judy Hugh, Rutgers)
- Coach/Manager of the Year (Juan Torres/Joel Alvarado, Puerto Rico)
- Rookie Team of the Year (Puerto Rico)
- Most Improved Team (Michigan)
- Division Director of the Year (Rajeev Sharma, New England)
Anyone from an NCTTA member school can send in a nomination, just email it to info@nctta.org by April 30th, 12pm Eastern time. The NCTTA Board and Division Directors will vote on the best-qualified candidate for each category.

2009
Championships Recap
Strong showings from Puerto Rico, Columbia, Toronto, and Rutgers, but
Texas Wesleyan's dominance continues
Can anyone say 3-peat? At the 2009 College Table Tennis Championships Texas Wesleyan captured both the Co-ed and
Women's Team Championships to extend their streak to three straight Championships. In a battle of
college table tennis undefeateds, Mark Hazinski (Texas Wesleyan)
upended former Wesleyan standout Eric Owens (now in medical school at
Midwestern University), handing Owens his first ever college table
tennis loss in the Men's Singles event. Owens was the Men's Singles
Champion every year from 2003 to 2007. The Women's Singles event saw
Judy Hugh (Rutgers) capture her first ever college singles title over
2007 Champion and 2008 Runner-up, Jasna Reed (Texas Wesleyan). Reed and
Hugh met in the semi-finals of the 2008 Championships. Reed won that
meeting in 7 games, and the 2009 rematch proved just as tight, but this
time Hugh prevailed in the 7th. Here's a rundown of all the winners:

Rick-Rolled), you may have missed this fun (and funny) table tennis video.
