We Love Our Volunteers!

NCTTA Salutes the People Who Really Make the Championships Possible

We really should give our gold medals to our wonderful army of volunteers at the 2011 Championships. Folks at NCTTA headquarters don't do that, but we really appreciate their faithful work come tournament time in mid-April.

Whether it is the grunt work of unloading trucks, serving with transportation needs or keeping score, volunteers make a big difference in the success of our tournaments year after year.

At the moment, more than 70 volunteers are signed up to help us from Wednesday through Sunday, but there's always room for more to give our splendid workers a break! We have 48 signed up as umpires and scorekeepers, 24 working registration tables, and 16 assigned to venue set-up, among other things. As you can tell, there will be people assigned several tasks along the way at our fantastic games in Rochester, Minnesota this week.

"It looks like I will be keeping busy during the tournament,'' says Minnesota Division Director Mark Stanchfield, who will be wearing several hats at the NCTTA's Big Dance. He also serves as a coach of the team from Rochester CTC and as an NCTTA Championships Committee member. At the tournament the hard-working Minnesota professor will also be serving as a scorekeeper.

NCTTA veterans like Ralph Presley, a longtime leader in the Georgia Division will be back to umpire at their 5th straight Championships. Kiswanto Thayib, president of the Rochester Table Tennis Club, will also be on the go in his hometown. Kiswanto will take on umpiring and scorekeeping assignments.

Members of Rochester's Table Tennis Club will help unload trucks Wednesday, set up Thursday and take down Sunday. We also have volunteers doing everything from taking pictures to writing stories to doing whatever at our site on the campus of Rochester Community and Technical College. Just can’t thank the volunteers enough for their efforts.

A few volunteer perks do come with the territory. We give them nice T-shirts, meals throughout the competition, a ticket to Saturday evening's awards dinner and the chance to rub elbows with some of the best people on the planet.

"We had a great crew of volunteers at the championship games in 2008 and 2009 in Minnesota,'' says NCTTA President Willy Leparulo. "We believe some of the same folks will be back along with some newcomers to make the 2011 tournament another success story.''

So if you see a volunteer helping out in Minnesota this week, tell them thank you! Hugs are optional!

Players and spectators alike will enjoy a jam-packed weekend of table tennis at the 2011 College Table Tennis Championships. The event starts Friday April 15th and continues to Sunday April 17th at the Regional Sports Center in Rochester, Minneosta.

Organized by the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association (NCTTA), the Championships are sponsored by Killerspin, a Chicago-based table tennis firm and Newgy Industries (Gallatin, TN).
